Its new Medieval & Renaissance wing house a V&A collection of sacred
and secular treasures spanning a period of 1300 years. Ten new galleries spread
over three floors opened in December 2009 which form a contemporary home for
nearly 2000 objects that tell the story of European art and design from the
Roman Empire to the end of the Renaissance.
This film explains the thinking behind the galleries and showcases work
ranging from masterpieces by Michelangelo, Donatello and the priceless
notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci.
The opening was described by art critic Andrew Graham-Dixon as 'an event of
tremendous significance, not just for Britain, but the world'. Richard Dorment
of the Daily Telegraph described it as 'a triumph'.
